Mutianyu Great Wall and Ming Tomb private tour

The Great Wall at Mutianyu

The mutianyu section of the Great Wall lies about 70 kilometers northeast of Beijing in Huairou County. This section measures 2,250 meters in length with 22 watchtowers, but of that, now only 1,700 meters with 14 watchtowers are open to the public.
The elevation at Mutianyu Pass is not that high, only 486 meters, but the highest point on the top of the mountain is over 1,000 meters above sea level. It was a strategic pass built in the Ming Dynasty. To its east is Gubeikou and to its west is Juyong Pass. This pass was strategically built in the mountains, so it was of military and strategic importance in ancient times.

This section was first built some 1,400 years ago during the period of the Southern Qi (479-502) in the southern and northern Dynasties. This section of the Great Wall was repaired, renovated and expanded in the Ming Dynasty. General Xu Da of the Ming Dynasty began the construction of the Great Wall from Shanhaiguan Pass to Mutianyu in 1368, and had Mutianyu Pass built in 1404 in 1569, the famous patriotic generals, Tan Lun and Qijiguang, rebuilt and restored this part. They added more watch towers here.
Qi Jiguang ( 1528-1587) was born in Shandong province. He was a famous Ming general who accomplished many achievements and earned many rewards in his life and won many battles in southeast China. He organized an adequate labor force to reinforce the original wall by building it higher and wider. He also had 1,200 watch towers built along the Great Wall from the Shanhaiguan Pass to Changping. This kind of construction of the watch towers not only offered the defending soldiers enough shelter and space for storing arms and ammunition but also a solid block of defense that was very effective in greatly reinforcing their combat strength. At the same time, they prepared the stones, rolling logs and stone-mines for defending and attacking. Actually, the watch towers were built along the Wall during Qi Jiguang¡¯s terms of office. In addition, a great number of stone mines were unearthed during the exploration of the section of the Great Wall at Mutianyu. Credit should be given to Qi Jiguang who developed the Great Wall by covering most of the construction with brick and stone and building spanning watchtowers.

Two unique features of the Mutianyu section are the battlements on both sides and the branch walls. The wall here was built with stone slabs and the top part with gray brick battlements. Other parts of the Great Wall have battlements only on the outer side and parapets on the inner side, but here both the outer and inner parapets are crenellated with merlons, so that shots could be fired at the enemy on both sides. This feature is very rare on other parts of the Great Wall with the battlements on both sides and crenels along the battlements.

At some places in this section, the mountain ridge branches out from either inside or outside the main wall, and another piece of wall was built on this mountain. The protrusions of the Great Wall are several meters or several dozen meters long on which watch towers were built. This part of the wall is known as; Branch wall, which was on the mountain ridge but connected with the main wall. Since the Branch walls had watch towers built on them, they controlled the high vantage points that protected the main part of the wall. The Branch walls really played an important role in the past.

The Mutianyu area has dense woods and rich pastures. Unlike other sections, Mutianyu has a beautiful landscape all the year round. In spring, the mountain sides are decorated with peach and plum blossoms; in summer, people feel cool here with the luxuriant green trees and grass; in autumn, the golden, red and crimson autumn colors can be seen everywhere on the tree leaves and fruits apples, pears, walnuts, chestnuts, and in winter, snow presents another attractive scene over the Great Wall.

In the past, this section was an important military consideration. Today, it is a very pleasant place to visit. Many parts of the Great Wall have collapsed through the years. In 1984, our government spent large funds on its restoration. The Great Wall of the Mutianyu section was opened to public in 1986. the section is accessible by cable cars from below, and it is known as another section of the Great Wall in Beijing.

Ming Tombs

there are a total of 13 Ming Emperors buried in this area, so it is called the "Thirteen Ming Tombs" in Chinese. in 1961, the Chinese Governments listed the "Thirteen Ming Tombs" as one of the important historical monuments under special preservation, and in 2003 the " Thirteen Ming Tombs" were listed as a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO.
